Twenty-seven years ago yesterday...

February 18, 1981; President Ronald Reagan warned a joint session of congress that the national debt is approaching $1 trillion ($1,000,000,000,000).
He illustrated his point as follows:
"A trillion dollars would be a stack of $1000 bills 67 miles high."
Under the careful management of our ruling classes we're now up around $9 trillion.
Let's revise Ronnie's figures, shall we?
First of all, RR didn't get out much and I guess didn't know that $1000 bills weren't printed anymore. So, a stack of $100's = 670 miles high.
Now, we'll take that 670 mile pile o' bucks and bring it up to date. 670 X 9 = 6030 miles.
Now, I don't know what the panic is about. Sure, it's WAY past the limits of the atmosphere - but only a bit over a quarter of the way to the moon. So, lighten up folks and comfort yourselves with this wisdom from (I'm a) Dick Cheney: "Reagan proved that deficits don't matter".
Thanks for that, Dick.
Let's look at what Little George's "Hobby War" (Was that insensitive? How about "his Oedipal obsession") is adding to this big pile of bills.

Wow, look at them numbers add up. If this doesn't make you want to hide under the bed you must be in a coma.
Sweet dreams.

Umm, the Moon is a little farther away than you think it is.

Mr. Oblivious indeed.
I'm off by a factor of ten.
As I recall, the moon is around 225,000 miles. Not really sure. I didn't check the mileage the last time I drove there.

Since you are adding up the cost of the "current war" Lets add on the cost of WWII where we are still occupying Germany, Korea where we still have an entire army tied down, Vietnam the cost of which we will never be over, Granada, Panama, Kosovo, Somalia and oh lets not forget that little debacle in the desert by Jimmy Carter with Iran and all the other little wars that were all started by Democrats.

Sir,
With all due respect, this one of the most specious arguments I've ever heard.
I had no agenda of bad-rapping Republicans. Democrats are no better.
"There's not a dimes worth of difference... at the national level"
George Wallace
I voted for RR twice and Bill Clinton once - and I regret that one vote far more than the previous two.
Now, Little George is an unqualified disaster. Can't be altered. It's a fact.
In fact, he may have delivered the death-blow to the USA as a world power.
Owing $9,000,000,000,000+ to the Chinese, millionaire Arabs and wealthy folk who can afford T-bills, is a textbook example of an ass that's gotten itself into a serious crack.
The man's a puppet, plain and simple.
And Carter's "debacle" was a result of stupid inter-service rivalry, bad luck and a lunatic Ranger, Colonel who hatched the scheme in the first place.
Presidents have little actual control over anything - much less complex military operations half a world away.
We were originally in Germany because of our terror of the Russians. Why are we still there? Good question. I don't know.
An army tied up in Korea? Bring them home. We're doing no good there.
At last, Why will be be paying for Vietnam "forever"?
Forever's a long time. Total deaths during the nine years of that Johnson/Nixon insanity equal less than two days of Antietam.
Really, getting your history from Rush and Anne Coulter isn't serving you well.
