"I don't make hell for nobody. I'm only the instrument of a laughing providence. Sometimes I don't like it myself, but I couldn't help it if I was born smart."

Paul Valery

"You are in love with intelligence, until it frightens you. For your ideas are terrifying and your hearts are faint. Your acts of pity and cruelty are absurd, committed with no calm, as if they were irresistible. Finally, you fear blood more and more. Blood and time."

The Wisdom of the Ages

"When a young man, I read somewhere the following: God the Almighty said, 'All that is too complex is unnecessary, and it is simple that is needed',"

Fred got his knives...

I should explain.
"Fred" is Fred Perrin, France's own eccentric weapons designer and all-around self-defense dude.
A few years ago he ordered a fair chunk of trench-knifage (industry term).
Fred's command of the English, although it kicks ass on my French - or any other language for that matter, is somewhat limited so the transaction was handled by a buddy of Fred's whose name I don't recall.
Nice guy. Bounced a few e-mails back and forth. Then the last I heard was that Fred hadn't gotten his stuff.
It'd only been a few weeks, not a huge deal on this international shit but I was sweating bullets.
It's no picnic, the life of the international arms dealer. Well, except for the annual "International Arms Dealers Picnic". That's a picnic, obviously.
Anyway, I told him to let me know if it showed up and hoped for the best.
I never heard back so...
Anyway, check this out.
Ya gotta love old Fred. I told you about the language thing.
Well, he's lifted my copy verbatim. That copycat.
I certainly don't care. It's not deathless prose by any means. In fact, if anything, I'm flattered (read: "I'll sue that Frog bastard back to the neolithic era").
Not really.
BTW the site mentions elsewhere that all blades were tested by Fred or one of the others.
I find that flattering as well. Cool, I passed muster - on some level - with one of the (many) gurus.
I would however like to provide for Mr. Perrin a link he may not have thought of - but, which concerns an incident mentioned in his (my) copy, "The Car-Door Test".
On an unrelated subject; notice that the pictures in this post have nothing to do with anything.
"Au contraire" , Fred's bud liked the photo I use to illustrate my "About me" page (see at top), a shot of the forge-shop on the USS Prometheus (AR 3), circa 1920, so I sent him a link to the rest.
The aforementioned boat was a Navy repair ship.
That photo, the other, plus several more can be found here at the Naval Historical Society site. The single coolest group of photos I know of.
BTW soon's I get a marine, water-tube boiler - and a boat to put it on - that's my power hammer.

You're a better man than me. I would be pissed off. You know you can't trust a country whose best fighting unit consists of foreigners. "March or Die!" That's how they get all their great ideas. Like selling technology to Middle East dictators, negotiating withdraws for the world (Lost War? Will Travel", and stealing shit.
