"I don't make hell for nobody. I'm only the instrument of a laughing providence. Sometimes I don't like it myself, but I couldn't help it if I was born smart."

Paul Valery

"You are in love with intelligence, until it frightens you. For your ideas are terrifying and your hearts are faint. Your acts of pity and cruelty are absurd, committed with no calm, as if they were irresistible. Finally, you fear blood more and more. Blood and time."

The Wisdom of the Ages

"When a young man, I read somewhere the following: God the Almighty said, 'All that is too complex is unnecessary, and it is simple that is needed',"

I'm So Cool!

Not just two posts in one day although that alone is well worth the price.

Behold, my Mag-tech 7022 (AKA Mossberg 702 "Plinkster").
My son bought this on the occasion of his 18th birthday. I subsequently bought it from him.
Everyone praises this little gun to the stars as; "A nice little rifle - for not much money").
They sometimes go as far as to say; "Don't bother looking for parts though".
A couple years ago, while putting it back together, I seriously tweaked the recoil spring (Uppermost of the wiry, springy looking things in the photo.
The great Numrich Gun Parts offered naught but firing pins and magazines.
My lad had lost his original magazine so I bought one - FROM WALMART - the only thing I ever have/will buy from that paragon of what's-wrong-with-capitalism.
But, McMaster-Carr... I've mentioned these guys before. Industrial suppliers. You can get anything you want as long as you know what they call it.
The other springy bits: A five pack of continuous length (11 inches. Yeah, that's continuous!)springs from McMaster-Carr.
At 11" they're a little over twice as long as I needed.
I chopped off the necessary length, plus a tiny bit extra, put the thing together.
I dug up a round of .22 (My thousands of rounds of "Oh shit!" ammo are safely stored in my imagination) and fed it to the old girl.
I went out, fired it at the woodpile. The action cycled.
Mission accomplished.
And, I can fuck the whole recoil spring up again - and salvage my ass again - nine more times.
$11.10 for the five-pack.
My fix cost a tad over fifty cents.
Maybe I should have gone to a gunsmith.
But, these things didn't come in the box by themselves, no sir.

Check out these bad boys.
If I'd only purchased one of them, then the "beer-roll-cage" job would be the only job available.
With two of them though... possibilities open up.
Given a day when I'm willing to roll around in the driveway, these guys are going into the old ragmop as overload springs - cheaper than J.C. Whitney.
On the subject of self-sufficiency, someone stole the MadOgre's identity (Why they'd want it is anyone's guess) so he's having to sell a gun. Ooooh noooo!
And he's not running for the senate because... he'd lose!
The Ross Perot philosophy.
However, my life... is good.
To quote Randy Newman.

22 ammo could well become a popular form of currency in the future with the way the government is printing money.

The Ruger 1022 is the best semi 22 of all time, some say. Every part has multiple aftermarket choices, the barrel R&R's in seconds. The Israeli army uses a suppressed version as a urban sniper rifle. Deadly out to 100 meters..quite as a mouse. S

I've thought that about .22LR for a long time.
Those and/or galvanized nails could be a good medium of exchange - far better than gold.

At the beginning of the Peloponnesian War, Sparta's monetary system was based on iron rods; not gold or other precious coins - basically they traded rusty nails as currency.

Payed for an extended war with rusty nails....
